Know Your Audience
Who are you writing for? You may choose to write for yourself, and that is absolutely okay, but if you do want to be able to market your work to the masses, it’s important to consider who your target audience is. Understanding your audience will help you better focus your tone, style, and content.
Create Well-Developed Characters
Characters are the heart of any novel. Investing the time in creating multi-dimensional characters will go a long way in keeping a reader’s attention. Characters shouldn’t be perfect, or completely evil. Even villains need redeemable qualities to keep them relatable. Help your readers connect with characters emotionally, so they’ll be invested in following their journey.
Craft a Strong Plot
Without a strong plot, your characters won’t have much chance at development. Your plot needs to hook a reader from the first page to the last. It should have a clear beginning, middle, and end while maintaining a good pace in between that has building tension and suspense.
Show, Don’t Tell
I know. I hate this one too. It’s probably the most common bit of writing advice out there, but as they say, clichés are clichés for a reason. Allow readers to immerse themselves in the story by using vivid descriptions, dialogue, and actions rather than just telling them what’s happening. This will help them experience the story along with the characters.
Have a Consistent Writing Routine
I’m a bit of a hypocrite, as my writing routine is still a work in progress, but consistency really is key to novel writing. I’ve even written about some of the excuses that come to mind for why I’m not writing. Setting aside dedicated time every day, or week to work on your manuscript will help you keep your momentum going and ensure steady progress. If you take weeks or months off from your work, going back to it will just get harder and harder. Trust me, I’ve been there! Learn from my mistakes!
Edit and Revise Ruthlessly
Once your first draft is done, you’ll need to rewrite the whole manuscript again. And possibly again, and again. Don’t shy away from the editing process. You should be willing to cut, rearrange, and enhance your work in order to strengthen your narrative. Also: DO NOT rely on your eyes only for editing. If possible, always hire a professional editor to go through your manuscript. We become so familiar with our own work that it’s impossible to spot every typo or error in consistency.
Seek Feedback from Beta Readers
Beta readers provide invaluable insights into how your novel resonates with an audience. Selecting a diverse group of beta readers who can offer constructive criticism and highlight areas for improvement will go a long way in ensuring the success of your novel. You can find beta readers for free in many bookish social media groups, but you can also hire professional beta readers, who might offer more comprehensive reports about their thoughts!
Balance Dialogue and Narrative
This is one I struggle with, but it’s important to find a balance between dialogue and narrative. Dialogue adds like to your characters, while narrative provides context and description. Having a well-blended mix will enhance the overall flow of your novel.
Read Widely and Analyze Successful Novels
Expand your literary horizons by reading a variety of genres and styles. Analyzing successful novels will help you get an idea of what works, and what doesn’t. Take note of techniques employed by successful authors and consider how you might incorporate similar elements into your own work. Reading a few blog posts that each have 10 tips for success is not going to be enough to fully understand the process! Learn from anywhere and anyone you can.

Writing a novel is a marathon, not a sprint. Stay persistent, especially during challenging moments. Embrace the creative journey, celebrate small victories, and learn from setbacks. The process itself is as rewarding as the final product!
